The primary function of the nucleolus, in eukaryotic cells, is the synthesis of ribosomal subunits from DNA instruction. Ribosomal subunits exit the nucleus through the nuclear pores. Once assembled in the cytoplasm, these ribosomes create a specific polypeptide.
